General Chair of KOWANI, Giwo Rubianto Wiyogo, Nominated for International Council of Women Board of Directors
Yogyakarta – Giwo Rubianto Wiyogo, the General Chair of the Indonesian Women’s Congress (KOWANI), has been given the opportunity to join the Board of Directors of the International Council of Women (ICW), a global women’s organization under the United Nations. This opportunity arose as one of the outcomes of the 35th General Assembly of ICW held in Yogyakarta from September 11th to 20th, 2018.
“Although the presidency of ICW is not currently within my reach, I am honored to be nominated for the Board of Directors after serving as the Coordinator for Communication at the ICW Standing Committee since the 34th General Assembly three years ago in Turkey,” stated Giwo during an interview in Yogyakarta on Tuesday (11/9/2018).
Giwo was interviewed on TVRI Yogyakarta Station as part of a special program leading up to the 35th General Assembly of ICW and the National Meeting of One Thousand Indonesian Women’s Organizations in Yogyakarta from September 11th to 20th, 2018. The program also featured Gatot Subagio, Chairperson of the organizing committee.
Giwo mentioned that after becoming a member of the ICW Board of Directors, he would need at least six more years or two additional terms to be eligible for the presidency of ICW.
He cited the example of Kuraisin Sumhadi, an Indonesian woman who served as the President of ICW from 1994 to 1997, who, after two terms or six years, went on to serve as the Vice President of ICW.
According to information from Antara, the current ICW Board of Directors for the period of 2015-2018 includes ICW President Jungsook Kim (South Korea), five Vice Presidents including Elisabeth Newman and Hean Bee Wee (Australia), Doris Bingley (Malta), Lina Liu (Taiwan), and Christine Knock (New Zealand), ICW Treasurer Martine Marandel (France), ICW Secretary Nabiye Isin Atala (Turkey), and two members of the ICW Board of Directors, Fatos Inal (Turkey), and Jamal Giil Hermes (Lebanon).
